PERFECT Hair Mask (Yet Another Reason Why Coconut Oil Is the Best)

Hello to everyone visiting from Pinterest!  I'm so happy that you've found my little corner of the Internet :) There's quite a bit here to explore, so please have a look around! Also, I'd love it if you would join us over on Facebook:

It's no secret that I'm in love with about five single-ingredient products: coconut oil, chia seeds, bee pollen, witch hazel, and beer. Wait. Beer... what? I mean... coffee. Yeah, coffee.

Anyway, back to coconut oil. I literally use coconut oil for everything.   EVERYTHING.   Frying, baking, spreading, facial moisturizer, body lotion, after-sun care, nutritional supplement, hand cream, boo-boo cream (I have a 2-year-old, so give me some slack. It's boo-boo and potty and wee-wee for now, ok?).   One of my favorite coconut oil uses, though, is as a hair mask.  I have really fine hair.  When it's healthy, it shines like crazy.   But, when it's dried out, it's crunchy and frizzy.   Not pretty wavy and textured, but crunchy (I know you know what I mean...).

I figured one day several months ago that if I use coconut oil for everything else, why not in my hair?! Here's how it works:

Start with an unrefined coconut oil (I'm a big Nutiva fan, and it can usually be found for pretty cheap on Amazon).

It'll be a solid in the tub, but will quickly melt in your hand.

After your shower at night, take between a teaspoon and a tablespoon-sized glob (it's a word) in your fingers, depending on the length of your hair.

Work quickly to massage it through your hair.  You'll want to make sure you've covered all the way from your roots to your ends.  Use extra oil, if needed.

Find a way to pull your hair up and back so it's not flopping around.  I braid the bottom of my hair and then secure it to the back and top of my head with bobby pins.  For some reason I always feel like Katniss Everdeen when I do this (laugh if you want, but it's the little things that get us through, right?).

Sleep with your hair this way (use a shower cap, if you are worried about greasing up your pillowcase).

In the morning, wash and condition your hair as usual.  When your hair dries, it'll be super silky, shiny, and soft!  For me, it lasts about a week in turbo hair mode and then starts to wear off.

Depending on your particular hair type, repeat every week to two weeks, as needed.

Let me know if you've tried this before or if you give it a go for the first time - I love to hear feedback on my favorite things (good and bad!)!

    1. I usually just use it when my hair starts feeling dry. Sometimes once per week and sometimes once per month (depending on how dry the weather is and how many times I scorched it with the curling iron that week). Come back and let me know what you think!

    2. Do you put the coconut oil on when your hair is wet then?

    3. As oil and water don't mix, I always start with dry hair. I find it absorbs much better.

    4. I put a small amount on my ends (long hair) after I've comb it out after shampooing. It makes it much easier to re-comb and put in ponytail, etc. I use a dollop about the size of a dime or nickel. Love it!

    5. To living unrefined: is it bad to use refined oil, i bought it and didnt know it had to be refined

    6. Refined oil lacks in the nutrients that makes it healthy for your hair due to its processing...from what I heard it wont harm your hair but it will prevent you from getting the outcome organic oil would give u sinced its bleached and extracted and all plus it lost its natural coconut scent...but still decent for other uses

    7. I am using coconut oil twice in a week. I didn't see any growth inmy hair. I want to know that how and how many times should I use it???

    8. My hair is waist length now but I do this at least once a week. My hair is fine but it has thickened up and grown a lot since I started using virgin coconut oil. It works as a deep conditioner and mends split ends also. I love it! Just be patient.

    10. What is the name of the product you are using. I have had some issues that are causing my already fine thin hair to begin to fall out. I am desperate and willing to try anything at this point. When you go from two hands to hold your hair to two fingers...it's an adjustment.

    11. I just went through having a bunch of my hair fall out over some months and what I had was so dry it reminded me of straw. It was getting so much worse over time. I have fine hair and thinner hair to start with. I was getting close to just wanting to cut it all off - seriously. I was also feeling cold and then hot. After searching around online I started taking an iron supplement and wow! My hair is feeling silkier again and getting some thickness back. Kind of glad I didn't shave it all off! I am interested in trying the coconut oil. Thanks for all of the advice.

    1. I've tried using it on my hair as a conditioner, but it doesn't rinse cleanly. You could try using it before you shampoo, letting it sit while you're in the shower, and then shampoo it out. I'm curious as to how well that would work (probably going to try it tonight!). Let me know if you have any success with it!

    2. Try cuting out harsh sulfates. They x can damage it more. And Deva Curl has AMAZING conditioner

    3. get a spray bottle and fill it with apple cider vinegar. spray on your hair but not your roots. Let it sit for a minute and then rinse. Good conditioner. When your hair dries the smell will be gone. I have thick hair and it works as a conditioner for me. I gather my hair to the left and spray/spritz. then gather on the right and repeat. then spray hair as it hangs normally in the back. It does need to be on the roots or scalp though.

    4. Dr. Oz show suggestion: add two or three drops to your conditioner. Rinse VERY well. It will make your hair feel so soft and silky. Use daily. It is supposed to add proteins to the hair.

    6. I use coconut oil on my hair every day as an anti-frizz/conditioning creme. I take a tiny amount, less than dime sized, and rub it in my hands first and then in my hair, concentrating on the middle section down to the ends. It's perfect for my wavy hair..doesn't weigh it down and tames the frizz. I'm in love with coconut oil!

    7. I haven't shampooed my hair in a year, I use baking soda to wash and apple cider vinegar to condition. i use a very very very tiny amount of coconut oil with a drop of any essential oil (since i don't have scented shampoo) on the ends of my hair as a leave in conditioner. I stress it is a really tiny amount i basically dip my fingertips in the coconut oil. It works great. however with the no shampoo method you only wash your hair 2 times a week, so i dont know how itll work if your using a chemical (most grocery store brands) or soap shampoo since you wash more (usually) and it really strips your hair of oils.

    8. I'm trying it tonight and I can't wait to see the results!! I have been trying to grow out my hair and I've been wanting it to be really long this time I grow it out but it always takes forever hopefully it works!! 4. I used these as a deep conditioner, but it didn't work so well. I had tried a detox since I have TERRIBLE hard water hair buildup, but the method I used didn't work so well. And until I get the mineral scales off my hair, nothing will work. But I didn't sleep with it in my hair. I might need to try that after my next session of a different detox method. But it sure felt good when I rubbed the extra all over my arms & legs!

    3. @ Julie L. We have ridiculously hard water. Once per month, I do a hair "detox" using 1 Tbs baking soda and 8 ozs of hot water. I just put it in a squirt bottle (not a spray bottle) and "wash" my hair with it in the shower. You may want to double your batch if your hair is longer than shoulder-length. When I first tried this, I was skeptical. My hair felt dry and squeaky in the shower. . . BUT, I followed the directions, mixture only (no shampoo or conditioner), then styled as usual. No more hard water/calcium build-up. My hair is soft and light.

Then the coconut oils may work like a champ! I am excited to try the coconut! LOVE the smell!

    4. I had dreadlocks for about 6 years until psoriasis forced me to cut them. I used Dr.Bronners soap to clean them for about 4 years not realizing it leaves residue and build-up and my dreads started feeling nasty all the time even tho I was washing them. Plus I have hard water too.. I learned about the baking soda wash with vinegar rinse. The first time I tried it the water was literally BLACK! It was so gross but I started using it on a regular basis and the water always came out much much cleaner. What I did was a gallon of water and about a cup of baking soda along with 3 or 4 drops of tea tree oil and orange oil which are great for breaking through greasiness and grime....soaked my hair it in for an hour or so dunking it in the water randomly....rinsed baking soda out and then rinsed with apple cider vinegar along with the same oils. I'll tell ya....If that can clean that much mess out of dreadlocks it will certainly work on regular hair. good luck :)

    7. Apple cider vinegar rinse is the best! Gets rid of any build up and makes your hair soft and shiney.

    8. I use lemon juice to get all the buildup out of my hair! Works like a charm! I just work it in like shampoo, then rinse. I usually follow up with shampoo and conditioner, but not necessary (especially if you use a lemon versus store bought juice).

    9. my hairdresser told me to use apple cider vinegar to clean the hair. some of the products used on hair will not wash off with shampoo alone. apple cider vinegar is a good cleanser. use on your hair after you shampoo it. do not use conditionar . put on the vinegar and let it dry. next washing do normal routine. this should take off stuff left from hair spray, moose, hair gel ect.

    10. Don't use lemon juice if you color your hair. It can bleach it. I used to use it 8 the summer to give my naturally brown hair red highlights.

  6. Does coconut oil have a negative affect on hair that has been dyed/colored? I used to do this before I dyed my hair but I am afraid that it will make my dye fade.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't dyed my hair in a couple of years (just been too busy!), so I can't give you a personal recommendation. But, I've heard of other people using it on dyed hair without any problems.

    2. I bleach my hair and coupled with this weather, it's gotten pretty dry. I left it on overnight and it was sooo soft and pretty all week. It didn't change the color or anything.

      Delete
    3. I have very long and dyed hair... the coconut oil has helped tremendously! I've never slept in it... I will have to get a shower cap and try that. I've always just put it in for a couple of hours. Much healthier hair paired with a good shampoo and conditioner (garnier and tresseme make good one for dry hair)

      Delete
    4. Instead of a shower cap you can use a plastic grocery bag :)

      Delete
    5. Instead of a shower cap that can be noisy when you move, I spread a large towel over my pillow. I sleep much better.

      Delete
    6. I actually use it before color or lightening. Saturate hair with co oil at least an hour before coloring and put the dye on hair over the co oil. Helps penetrate the color and protects hair from dyd damage. My hair looked amazing even after using a high lift color on it no damage.

      Delete
  7. I have corkscrew curls that are REALLY dry and not to mention that my tresses are also color-treated... I use coconut oil once a week (I melt a little in the microwave, pour it on, comb it through and then put a shower cap on) and let it sit a couple of hours. Afterward, I shampoo and condition as usual and let it air dry with some product on it. It is incredible how much better my hair feels! Even my stylist has commented as to how much healthier my hair is. I just wish I would have known about this decades ago.

  8. I have been using CO on my hair after I shower, I put a dab in my palm rub hands together until melted, the run it through my hair. I have no fly always or static and it manages the curls, my hair has never looked better! My hair is a bob length, so you might need more for longer hair. I will never use a anti frizz product again. This is so cheap.

  9. Does your hair have to be damp when you apply it or should your hair be dry? I just had a baby 4 1/2 months ago and my hair has become super-fine and has been falling out (I actually have 2 small bald spots!) and I am DESPERATE for something to make my hair grow back healthier. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you have bald spots you more than likely have something called alopecia. Don't worry...I have it. For me if my body goes through stress or I am under mental stress, I will get a bald spot, but they "always" grow back. I'm a litle skeptical about the coconut oil making hair grow. I'm a hairstylist and have always believed that hair growth is from the cuticle and has nothing to do with what you do to the ends.

      Delete
    2. I put it in dry... I don't believe it makes hair grow but it keeps whatyou have healthier and shinier. I don't have to get a trim as often and not nearly as much taken off when I do go in so my hair is getting longer. Hope you find out how to stop the bald spots! Good luck

      Delete
    3. Hair growth comes from the follicle...the cuticle is the outside layer of hair....to the girl losing hair after having a baby. Continue taking your prenatals. It might help a little. When I had my first son I didn't take them anymore and lost a lot of hair. But when I had my twins I kept taking them and I haven't lost any yet.

      Delete
    4. Breastfeeding will also cause your hair to fall out. If you are breastfeeding do not fear it will grow back. I suggest also continue taking the prenatals. Ahh the joys of motherhood and sacrifices we make for our children.

      Delete
    5. That is simply not true. Breastfeeding does not cause your hair to fall out. The change in hormones does.

    6. Hair loss after childbirth is extremely common; everyone has a different degree due to heredity, nutrition, etc. Vitamins should be continued during nursing. Some ladies notice a different hair type after having a baby-mine was definitely curlier than before. If you did not supplement during pregnancy, the nutrients went to the baby and your body was depleted but will go back to normal. ....also coconut oil benefits the scalp as well as the hair, be sure to massage it in before washing

    7. I use a half bottle of Dr. Bonner ' and a (can of coconut milk found in the Exotic food isle in the grocery store). Then I add twenty five drops of pure Rosemary Essential Oil, shake well. Massage scalp as you are shampooing your hair. After shower I use aloe vera gel (in a medium sized jar) and 50 drops of pure Rosemary Essential Oil, mix. Massage into scalp and spread through hair. I use this mix every day massaged into my scalp. My hair & scalp has became stronger. I get very little bit of hair in my brush now.

I have been doing alot of research on different natural things to help with my hair.Over the years my hair hair has been falling out and thinning.I have done alot of reading on the benefits of Aloe Vera Gel.I have read that it helps with hair regrowth as well as making your hair healthy again.I have tried this for about 3 weeks now and my hair has not felt this healthy in a really long time.I wash my hair every other night with shampoo and skip on conditioner because there has not been any need for it.While your hair is wet apply the aloe vera gel and let it sit for about an hour(keep hair rapped in towel) and simply rinse out with water.I have read that women with curly hair use this as a gel and it keeps their curls nice and soft..Once a week I do the CO treatment.

I used to use the LouAnn brand, too, but it's actually a refined oil, so it doesn't have all of the great benefits of the unrefined versions - if you're on a tight budget or are in a pinch, it will work just about as good, though!

  23. Reading the comments I noticed alot of readers asking about a good detox for your hair if you use alot of styling product or hard water build up. I found a scalp "mask" that has been working wonders for me! It relieved my dry, flaky, tight skin from winter months, stimulated my scalp and sped up my hair growth(which was a miracle to my thinning, non growing hair), and left my hair so soft and shiny! I'm seriously in love! haha Anyways, thought I'd share :)
Take about 4 tablespoons softened coconut oil, mix with 2-4 (depending on sensitivity) drops tea tree oil, and 3-4 drops of rosemary oil.
I put it on the same way I would dye my hair in sections all over your scalp, massage in for about 5 minutes, wrap in a shower cap for 20 minutes then shampoo and condition as usual. Use about once a month! :)

  38. For build-up on your scalp and hair, try plain old baking soda and water. Mix a small amount of the baking soda (I have hair down to my butt and I would use about 2-3 tablespoons) with enough water to make it pasty. Rub your scalp down good and then the rest of your hair. It will take any build-up from your hair follicles ..which will in turn make your hair grow :) Then, use the coconut oil treatment for healthy and shiny hair..

  39. Have you found that the oil stains your sheets at all? I normally do a coconut oil mask before I go to the gym--the heat coming off your scalp through exercise apparently helps the oil seep in--or so my hair dresser tells me. Great for softening cuticles during an at home manicure too!

  54. I have been using coconut oil in my hair since I was little child, I add a bit of olive oil, castor oil ( good for promoting hair growth) and almond oil in equal ratio, it keeps hair healthy and shiny. I always carry a bottle of coconut oil to the beach to massage my head before heading to the beach, massage oil for body after a shower.

    1. Take prenatal vitamins. I know it sounds odd, but they're wonderful for hair and nail growth- even if you're not pregnant or nursing. I tend to be low on iron, so I'm not concerned about the iron in the prenatals, but if you are, try buying vitamins specific to hair and nails. Good luck!

  59. Tried this for the first time last night. I used Trader Joe's Coconut Oil -- my hair is curly, thick and goes to the middle of my back unstraightened and dry, so it took two heaping tablespoons full to cover everything. Covered my head in a shower cap and slept with it in. I probably spent 13 hours with it soaking into my hair. I shampooed twice this morning and oh my GOSH is my hair soft. My scalp feels a lot nicer, too! I am definitely a coconut oil convert :)

  61. I do like using coconut oil as a deep conditioner (as we speak i'm under my bonnet dryer doing a coconut oil treatment with heat) but i'm unsure if I will continue to use the coconut oil by itself. This is my first time doing it with heat so maybe for me it will come out better. Using just coconut oil in the past I hadn't noticed any difference in my hair and I always left it on overnight. I'd like to try adding some honey, avocado or jojoba oil to the coconut oil and see how it comes out. Everyone's hair reacts differently to some things and mine for some reason loves the jojoba, I've just been too lazy to go buy some.

  62. can you use refined coconut oil?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The refined version tends to be cheaper and totally fine for cooking and baking. I would suggest finding a good price (either on sale or Amazon) and getting the unrefined it you can budget for it. They do have a 1 year shelf life so I will buy two jars if I find it on sale. Also, I am not brand loyal, I just stick to the rules: organic, cold pressed and unrefined so I will buy whatever brand is on sale and meets the criteria. The refined has additives and the extra processes remove a lot of the good stuff for hair and skin. The refined is not bad per say, just not a chocked full of benefits. If you only have refined on hand and don't want to buy more, try it out!

      Delete
  63. I use Nutiva as well it is organic, cold pressed and unrefined. I find it at my local health food store in the oils aisle. From my research, I have read that unrefined is best for putting on your skin and in your hair, less processing has been done to the product. I have highlighted blonde hair, fine, bra strap length, naturally straight mainly. I use the oil as a deep treatment either bi-weekly or monthly depending on the time of year. I apply the oil onto my dry and dirty hair. I always prefer to do a treatment the night before I am washing my hair the next morning since I try not to over wash my hair 3 times a week maximum. I use a generous amount...probably 4 tbsps. I generally just let the oil melt in my hands in small doses and apply it starting from the scalp and working down the shaft. I always give myself a good scalp massage in the process to help with circulation (been said to assist with hair growth). I use bobby pins to put it up in a bun and sleep with it in overnight. I don't use a shower cap- just a soft towel to protect my pillow. In the morning I shampoo with my regular stuff twice and style as usual. This gives me great results and I usually notice a huge difference in texture for about 4 days after. Only thing is it sometimes makes your hair too soft to style so get use to using it before trying it before an event or something important. I also use it as a night oil on my face. A lot of people question that one but I melt a small amount (you only need very little) and lightly apply it to my clean skin. It looks "oily/greasy" at first but I try to wash my face about 20-30 mins before I want to sleep and if you're using the correct amount, it will be absorbed by then. Google the benefits of applying the oil to skin. Again, I am using unrefined. With oil, I see less breakouts and redness. I have had acne troubles and combo skin since grade 7 and coconut oil keeps my skin happy.

  65. How long was your hair before you started using coconut oil? How fast would you stay it grows with the help of the coconut oil?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hey all! I think this is a great article and so many more ladies should learn and enjoy the benefits of coconut oil. You don't have to buy it on amazon, it's actually more tangible and can be purchased at Walmart for $10 or (where I get mine) at the vitamin shoppe for $15 (a better deal, bigger bottle). I also use coconut oil as a cooking ingredient, and add it in my coffee or tea. I actually have Alopecia Areata and started using CO when I started losing hair. I do a CO hair mask once a week, warming up the oil first and then massaging it into my scalp (dry hair). I massage extra well into the parts where I have lost hair and part my hair Into sections and try to completely cover my scalp. I wrap it up and cover my hair (as the oil will stain). Then 3 other days of the week I apply a Castor oil mask. It helps with thickening my hair while CO helps soften and strengthen from the roots. With both of these masks, after applying, I will sit under my blow dryer on warm heat and it helps jump start circulation of the scalp to soak in the oil. Good luck! -Christa :)

  70. Thinking of giving this a try I'm at my wits end.. Over the past year my hair has become extremely fine and so thin that within the next few months I'm sure I'm gonna be bald.. I'm only 32, my hair is quite long and generally grows quite fast.. But I'd say I've lost over half my hair.. I've had a few traumatic events which I think have caused it but was hoping it'd start growing back and thicken up.. But I'll be bald before too long.. Its extremely bad at the back, from above the nape of my neck and also at the front and sides so looks like I'm receding as well.. I need a miracle treatment.. Does this oil actually thicken hair or does it just make it soft and shiny? Any other suggestions welcomed

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Coconut oil will not make your hair grow. It will only work to repair the current condition of your hair, or to prevent future damage to your hair. It is the only oil treatment that actually penetrates the hair shaft. I recommend using a little heat along with a regular coconut oil mask.

  79. Has anyone had any trouble with your drain clogging up because of rinsing your hair in the shower?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If your not using a drain catcher for your hair to get caught i%n before it gets stuck in the pipes, then you'll probably have problems with the drain clogging up. Because you're using stimulating the scalp during treatment with coconut oil or whatever it is that your doing, your probably shedding a little bit more than usual as well as oil residue build up if you're using a ton of it very frequently. It is a good idea to use a drain catcher. I only know this because I have long thick hair regardless of any treatments I'm using on my hair, I too have to be careful of clogging the drain. Best of luck

  83. what about the other 4 things..like chia seeds, bee pollen, witch hazel, and coffee.....how these all things help in hair growth.

  84. I've done this many times, with coconut oil. If you have frizzy hair and nothing works, try it. I'm not bragging at all, but I now have glorious hair. Soft, silky, and I'm usually dealing with thick frizzy curls. I also have dark hair naturally, so I use coffee as well.
THE BEST TREATMENT REGIME FOR THE THICK-HAIRED BRUNETTE:
Monday: Depending on your hair length. put an egg, or a couple eggs into your hair. The yolk contains many nutrients that are essential in shampoos and conditioners. It will strengthen your hair, while the egg whites make it more silky. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water. If you use hot water it may cook the egg in your hair, and that takes FOREVER to get out.
Tuesday: Do not wash, do not do anything to your hair. Just leave it. If you go swimming, pull it up and try not to get it wet.
Wednesday: Time for the first coffee rinse. Let's start in the morning when you wake up. If you live with family, you may have some left-over coffee to work with. If not, brew yourself about 6-8 cups, depending on how much you drink. Double or triple brew. You want about 1-2 1/2 cups, depending on hair length/thickness. Lather your hair in this overly strong coffee. It helps to prevent lightening in your hair.
Thursday: Take 1 cup of milk to 1/3 cup of honey. This will strengthen your hair as well as add many nutrients. This is like taking a cup of fish oil to your hair but without the yucky smell. In fact, Cleopatra used this same technique instead of our modern-day shampoo and conditioner. While those specialty shops claim to use the same recipes as Cleo, you can actually do so with the stuff in your kitchen cupboard.
Friday: Oils. Use oils. Depending on what you keep in your cupboard, use peanut oil or olive oil. Not vegetable oil or canola, that stuff has way too many preservatives, plus it clogs your pores. Massage your chosen oils into your hair and scalp, focusing on the tips/split ends. You may need to wash, rinse and repeat.
For Saturday and Sunday: Do not wash. Keep your hair as dry as possibly, and only brush/comb when necessary. Brushing and combing causes torn hair, and that very breakage is what creates split ends. Coffee your hair as often as necessary to keep your hair from lightening in the sun. Use coconut oil to prevent frizz. Use eggs/milk/honey to keep your hair strong. *You should spread your "dry days" out through the week. Weekends are often ideal as per your job.
One more thing: Cold-pressed Hemp Seed Oil is your very best friend. For hair as well as skin. Abandon your regular skin moisturizer and replace it with hemp oil. Same works with shaving lotion. You can pronounce every ingredient in hemp seed oil and as someone who used to have problems with skin, I give it my gold seal of approval.
    FOR ANY HAIR:
Do not brush your hair too often. It damages the tips of your hair due to ripping. When you brush your hair, start at the tips and slowly work your way to the roots.
Do not wash your hair too often. You want it to soak up the natural oils that your body produces.
Do not dye your hair. If I need to explain why, humanity sucks. Dyes have things like bleach, and just try to pronounce everything on the back of the box...Seriously.....I'll wait...
Do not double wash your hair unless you are trying to get rid of an oil rinse. You will strip your hair of the nutrients you've been trying to build up.
    REPLACE YOUR SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER:
Anything you buy that does not to be "paraben or silicone free" is bad. Put that back on the shelf and find something like Down Under Natural's. I personally use Pantene.
    Hope this helps!

Here's to hoping it does the wonderful things i'm hoping for

  109. So do cats! That love coconut oil too! I have 18 of them, so you can imagine what's that like when I put it on my hair! I love my rescued fur babies but they chew and snap my hair off (a ha bunt a few of them have and I don't need anything on my hair for them to do it but with the oil or if it smells super good after dying or washing they go more mad with it) and after having chemo (I have not terminal but incurable leukaemia) and bleaching my hair for years bright colours (from being 17 with an odd break of goth black) and then White for years (about 3 years ish), my hair isn't as thick or string as once was, I use coconut oil cos it makes it shiny and when I use it and apply (strongest salon grade) bleach over the top, you'd not think (other than the fresh colour) that Id just bleached it, you would think that I had just paid for a very expensive deep condition! I also use it as I find it does help my hair grow slightly faster; as I use it from scalp to tip and massage my scalp daily (with or without the coconut I massage for 4 mins). I use to counteract the damage from my cats snapping off my hair when I'm sleeping and I find when they snap it short that when I don't use the oil or massage, it takes far longer for it to grow out to a decent length again.

I'm growing my hair as long as I can and am going silver and lilac in colour for my mums summer wedding and since my 31st birthday a week before Christmas my hair has already grown way over a foot in length using the massage technique and oil weekly and put it on before bleaching (bleach right over the top of the oil) and most recently I bleached it 2 times in a week yet it's a slick as wet glass and soft as cotton wool; yet after chemo I noticed my hair was growing so slowly (bleaching white as it was growing back probably didn't help), I was also born with a rare unnamed bone disease which started to get super painful and in need of many serious operations in my mid 20s to beyond (last op was in late November) and that also causes my hair and nails to grow slower. Lost my eyebrows and eyelashes due to chemo still have some missing and eyelashes bent all ways sad cos I had naturally curly one) and stuff grows weaker as my diseases worsens as well as I look more washed out, pale and is now effecting my muscles too. I find using the oil for skin and as an edible supplement helps my skin stay soft and helps me healthily put on weight or at least maintain my weight (add to milkshakes, use for cooking etc). I'm gonna try on my eyebrows to see if I can encourage that last bald bit and my eyelashes to see if they grow better too.

We also use it on my partners feet, he works 6 days 80 hours a week as security (was working 90+ hours 7 days recently) and is always on his feet, he even walks to work and back daily. Well his feet are super dry, inches deep and crack inches deep which split and bleed. (Convinced he's diabetic cos none of his family are slim and his dad's feet are the same, I ask for him to be tested but try won't; and he has other symptoms too plus he's heavily bing drunk over the years too). This helps keep his skin soft- soft skin= can't crack, it only cracks cos it is dry, the softer it is the better and more supple his feet and skin is, meaning no pain and no bleeding and no discomfort. Sometimes at the end of a day he's in so much pain he's limping and can't bear the uphill walk home meaning taxis with
Money we can't afford to be spending really and he's dreading work the next day and the cycle starts again- but this seems to be a great solution, it's early days but he was happy with the first results and hasn't needed a second lot on his feet as yet! He is bad for waiting until his feet are bad until he tells me but its over a week and he's said nothing about pain even.

All I have to do is get the bottle or jar out of our coconut oils and my kitties go insane bless them, they try kick it through the container haha!!

  112. Another good tip, and this sounds gross but, once a month, do your regular coconut oil hair mask. Let it sit for a little bit and soak in, then whip up 1 egg and proceed to put it in your hair, starting from the bottom layer and working up. I find your hair really starts to stick together when you do this so working in layers helps a lot. You will probably have a little bit of egg left afterwards, so I just keep putting it into my hair which is one big egg dreadlock at this point. I then wrap it up in a plastic bag and let it sit for about 45 min - 2 hours (depending on if I get busy doing something around the house and forget it's there). Rinse out in the shower well and shampoo and condition as regular. You will have the silkiest, smoothest, shiny hair. Just make sure to not do it more than once a month, too much protein in your hair can make it brittle.

  113. SO - I bought the coconut oil and read lots and lots of posts, especially this one! I did it today. I warmed the GLOBS of oil in my hands and then saturated each section of my hair. Clipped it up, covered it with a plastic bag and then with a microfiber head towel for 4 hours! I washed twice with coconut oil shampoo and conditioned with coconut conditioner. My hair felt like a matted nest, but I kept going, Sprayed my sulphate free leave in on and BRUSHED (YES, I said brushed, not combed...bad bad!) it through. Added a few pumps of coconut oil and proceeded to flip my hair for drying. Even though I DEPISE my new brush, I used it AND the end results....no visible breakage popping out like devil horns, ends looked MUCH better and I was SUPER happy with the result. SO, thank you all.....after two back-to-back almost pregnancies, over hi-lighting, heat styling and simply over processing my hair...I am happy to think that I am on the road to recovery!

  114. I have bottom-of-the-bra (a scientific hair measurement), straight, blonde hair; so, it's fairly thin but there's a lot of it and I can go three days without washing my hair before it looks greasy. This also means it can start looking frayed and damaged, even though it's not, quickly. I try to do an oil treatment on it once a week and that keeps it healthy and growing. I prefer doing it with dry hair, it just seems to work better for me and it makes it easier for me to make sure that all of my hair is covered. I also recommend buying SPIN-PINS if you do this or if you don't. you just twist your hair into a bun on top of your head and twist the pin into the bun. The hair is safely secured on top of your head, it won't fall no matter how much you shake it or move around, and it won't rip your hair, like some hairbands (ponytail-holder, elastic, whatever you call it) will, as your hair dries when it's up in a wet bun. They're super convenient and I can't remember the last time I used a hairband.
